Karasu - Part 1
Upon a old, wooded mountain, there was once was a temple. The surrounding trees were knotted, yet proud. It was a well kept temple -- maintained and honored by a group of monks numbering no more than twenty. Their lives were quiet and filled with prayer and study.

Despite their peaceful nature, and despite their respect for the land and one another, the temple was never visited by the villagers from the foot of the mountain. It was a place mentioned only in hushes, in tales to frighten children and in stories shrouded with superstition. The monks, of course, were not human like the villagers were. The walk back to the temple was hurried. Nearly a hundred stone steps led up to the entrance of the grounds, each worn with age and lined with moss. Shichi had been expected to return before the evening meal, but most had already entered the dining hall. Only his mentor, one of the elders at the temple, remained outside.

“Ah, there you are,” she said, glancing up from her seat on the wooden stairs. She had been reading scripture by the fading sunlight. “I was beginning to get worried.”

“Master Sagiri,” he replied, bowing his head in apology. “Forgive me, I was distracted.”

The following days seemed to drag behind the young monk. While before he experienced occasional distraction, he now found it nearly impossible to focus. The pace of his daily tasks was hindered by perpetual musing. It felt as if he had been given a wonderful book to read, only to have it taken away after the first page. What more could he have learned from her?  With slight embarrassment, he also wondered if she ever thought of him, as well -- or if she had already forgotten about their encounter. When he realized he would probably never see her again, his daydreams faded into disappointment.

The months passed by and spring made way for summer, filling the air with the hum of cicadas. Once a week, Kana would make her way up the mountainside to spend an afternoon in the old storehouse. The two would often spend the hours talking, reading together or walking through the forest. She told him about humanity and the ways they lived, grew, and interacted. Shichi explained, to the best of his ability, the values held by the monks in the temple -- that every being deserved to live and find happiness, and that every life had value. I absolutely adore your style - the Fishbones comic is coming along great, I look forward to the updates every week. (You probably hear this a lot, but I couldn't help myself, I really had to tell you.)

By the way...Did you attend SVA? (School of the visual arts) in new york?
Your style seems very familiar...I took a tour there last christmas and picked up an animation thesis DVD, and I think your stuff was on it...But I'm not sure.
